Five Indian States Account For 75% of Solar Module Manufacturing Compensate RE Generator For Curtailment, CERC asks Karnataka SLDC

India is rapidly expands its solar module manufacturing capacity, with Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra, and Karnataka taking a lion’s share. An analysis of the latest ALMM list of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) by Saur Energy hinted at this trend. It claimed that around 75 percent of India’s solar module manufacturers listed under this hail from these five states alone.

Gujarat is the leading solar module manufacturing state with 32 solar enlisted module manufacturers. Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra followed it with seven plants each. Telangana has six plants, and Karnataka has five.

The data claimed that currently, only 17 Indian states have entities producing solar modules. With most of the production going in five states, the remaining states must gear up and take a step forward. However, what it doesn’t say is that the future of solar manufacturing is going to be even more skewed in favour of Gujarat, if one goes by the announced projects that are in the pieline or being implemented. Be it the 20 GW Reliance Gigaplex at Jamnagar, or expansions underway with Goldi Solar, Waaree, and multiple other solar players in Gujarat, we believe that by 2026, if plans move on schedule, Gujarat alone could be accounting for over 60% of total solar module capacity in the country.

The Union government has taken several steps to promote solar manufacturing in the country, including providing subsidies and tax breaks to solar manufacturers. These measures have helped to attract investment in solar manufacturing, and the industry is now growing rapidly.

The demand for solar power is also growing rapidly in India, as the government is committed to increasing the share of renewable energy in the country’s energy mix. It is also reflected in India’s net-zero plans for 2070 and its commitments made through its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). This demand is expected to continue to grow in the coming years, creating further opportunities for solar manufacturing in India.

The data claimed that currently, only 17 Indian states have entities producing solar modules.
