First in Finland: Elo Shopping Centre to Get over 1 MW Rooftop Solar Plant By Manu Tayal/ Updated On Mon, Oct 7th, 2019 This power plant is expected to be completed by the next month of the current year, and Helen Ltd is responsible for the construction of the project. In a bid to get power through renewable energy, Finland’s first roof mounted solar power plant with capacity of over 1 MW, which is currently under construction on the roof of Sponda’s Elo Shopping Centre in Ylöjärvi. Sponda Plc is a property investment company which specialized in commercial properties in larger cities of Finland. It owns, leases and develops retail and office properties and shopping centres. This power plant is expected to be completed by the next month of the current year, and Helen Ltd is responsible for the construction of the project. Post completion, the solar plant will provide 27 percent of Elo’s total power consumption. Under this solar power project, a total of 3,186 solar panels are likely to be installed on the roof of the shopping centre, and it’s installation area is approx. 12,000 square metres, which is approx. 40 percent of the total roof area. Moreover, the plant will enable Elo Shopping Centre to trim it’s per year CO2 emissions by around 112,000 kg. The move came as the company’s sustainability strategy aims to increase energy efficiency and share of renewable energy in its overall energy consumption. Commenting on the development, Sponda, Sustainability Manager, Pirkko Airaksinen said, “We take environmental responsibility into account in all of our work and operations. Sponda was ranked this year best in Europe among the real estate companies in the Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark (GRESB) assessment. This international recognition is a sign we are doing the right things.
