Fiat To Become Electric Only Vehicle Maker by 2030

Iconic Italian automaker Fiat Automobiles has announced plans to shift completely to making electric vehicles (EV)  by the year 2030. Fiat also plans to phase out all ICE (internal combustion engine) vehicles by the beginning of 2025.

Speaking of electric mobility at Fiat, its CEO, Mr. Olivier Francois was quoted as saying by Engadget, “It is our duty to bring to market electric cars that cost no more than those with an internal combustion engine, as soon as we can, in line with the falling costs of batteries.”

 Recently, Fiat has released an electric version of its 500 city car in some regions. At least for the time being, the standard 500 will still be available as well, Fiat is keen to help improve access to EVs, charging infrastructure, and air quality.

“The decision to launch the New 500, electric and electric alone, was taken before Covid-19,” Francois said in a discussion with architect Stefano Boeri. Also, Fiat and Google come together in an exclusive collaboration, known as 500 Hey Google. It is the new special series of the New 500 Family, where Google Assistant technology meets the 500 and its world of coolness, design, and iconic style for the first time ever.

“Even then, we were already aware that the world could not take any more compromises,” Francois added.

To attract the consumer Fiat also provides incentives and other advantages on EV purchases. Interestingly, it gives KIRI coins as you drive its New 500 electric car more. KIRI is an ‘eco-friendly’ digital coin.

Fiat joins a long list of auto majors that have decided to go completely electric, much earlier than predicted a few years back. With global watchdogs and agencies like the IEA urging a complete shift to electric by 2035, expect this trend to continue.
