EDF Renewables Sets Sights on Three Grid-Scale Battery Sites in UK EDF Renewables UK is in the process of establishing three grid-scale battery sites in Kent, Norwich and Essex. The firm has set sights on the deployment of battery storage units in 40 strategic locations across the UK. The three sites for battery storage entail the 50 MW / 100 MWh lithium-ion battery storage unit in Kent. The construction on the project is slated for early next year and is expected to start operations in 2025. The second sit is the 114 MW / 228 MWh lithium-ion battery storage unit in Swainsthorpe, Norwich. The construction for this project is also supposed to kick off in 2024. As well as supporting Norwich City Council’s nether ambitions. The third site is in Essex for the 57 MW / 114 MWh lithium-ion battery storage. The timeline for the construction is 2024 and it will be linked to National Grid’s Braintree substation in October 2024. Once constructed, EDF Renewables UK will also establish a private wire for electric vehicle (EV) charging to for charging hubs in the region As per the National Grid estimates, the UK could need up to 35 GW of electricity storage by 2050 for electricity supply and demand management as the country shifts to renewables. The Braintree and Norwich battery storage units will be co-located with solar projects in proximity. A few days ago, manufacturer of solar modules Canadian Solar and EDF Renewables North America entered into an agreement for multi-year module supply of 7 GW high efficiency N-type TOPCon solar modules.
