The Delhi government recently launched a new solar portal to make the process of rooftop solar application hassle-free. The government said that the portal will serve as a one-stop platform for consumers interested in availing the benefits of Delhi’s Solar Energy Policy. The policy offers a range of incentives that, according to the government, provide a dual benefit: enabling free electricity and allowing citizens to earn ₹700–₹900 per month.

The Delhi Solar Portal, developed on similar lines to the National Rooftop Solar Portal of the Union government provides the consumers with information about the subsidies, and the details of the empaneled vendors in the region. It also provides them with all information regarding the application process to install rooftop solar. With this application, the consumers are empowered to also calculate the benefits through its solar calculator. The Delhi government said that the move is likely to encourage eligible solar consumers in the state to go for solar.

To meet its target of sourcing 70% of renewable energy from solar by 2027, the government has also set a goal to install rooftop solar panels on government buildings. This initiative supports Delhi’s Solar Energy Policy, released in March 2023, which aims to achieve 4,500 MW of installed solar capacity. This includes 750 MW of rooftop solar within Delhi and 3,750 MW of utility-scale solar sourced from outside the state.

Under the latest scheme, in addition to the existing provision of 200 free electricity units, the government provides subsidies for solar panel users consuming 200–400 units. The policy also extends concessions to users consuming over 400 units. To implement this scheme effectively, the Delhi government launched the Delhi Solar Portal, designed as a single-window platform to provide details about the solar policy and share information about empaneled vendors. The government claims the policy offers an opportunity for citizens to earn additional income by installing solar panels. Delhi Chief Minister Aitishi in a press conference also launched the portal and talked about the benefits from this scheme.

This generation-based incentive given by the Delhi government for rooftop solar consumers is as follows-
