Vattenfall, the Swedish renewable energy company, has chosen Vestas, the Danish wind turbine manufacturer, as the preferred supplier for the Norfolk Vanguard West project in UK, which boasts a capacity of 1.38 gigawatts (GW).

As part of the preferred supplier agreement for the Norfolk Vanguard West project, Vestas will provide 92 V236-15 MW offshore wind turbines for the project.

Henrik Andersen, President and CEO of Vestas, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration on the Norfolk Vanguard West project, “The positive negotiations between our two entities and the encouraging policy changes outlined by the UK Government for the upcoming auction have led to these agreements.”

In November 2023, the UK Government unveiled intentions to boost the maximum price for offshore wind projects by 66% in the subsequent round of renewables auction scheduled for March 2024.

Moreover, the two firms have signed exclusivity agreements covering the Norfolk Vanguard East and Norfolk Boreas projects, combining for a joint installed capacity of 2.76 GW.

Last month, Vestas announced project wins of 1,220 MW capacity in the US and European markets.

UK’s Push to Offshore Wind Sector

The UK holds a leading position globally in offshore wind energy, boasting an existing installed capacity of nearly 8 GW, capable of powering approximately 7 million households. Moreover, there are commitments in place for an additional 7 GW, either already underway or committed for construction.

Aligned with the UK government’s pledge to elevate the nation’s offshore wind energy generation to a minimum of 30 GW by 2030, the country is poised for continued growth in this sector. Over 30 new wind farms and associated projects are currently in various stages of planning or development, contributing significantly to the realization of these ambitious targets.

This commitment stems from the UK government’s long-term strategy, established as part of a Sector Deal in collaboration with the offshore wind industry.
