Chennai Central to go Greener Than Ever By Anirudh Sharma/ Updated On Mon, Aug 13th, 2018 The Chennai central station has been marked green for its capacity to recycle water, produce its 7 percent of electricity requirement from solar panels and waste management. After getting ‘Green Building’ certification for its main Chennai central railway station, the Chennai Division of Southern Railways is now mulling to reapply for the higher ranking like silver, gold or platinum from Indian Green Building Code (IGBC) for the station. The station is becoming more environment-friendly after being certified as a building that contributes to the protection of environment. The Chennai central station has been marked green for its capacity to recycle water, produce its 7 percent of electricity requirement from solar panels and waste management. An official in the department said, “100 % of water requirement to wash the station, including track apron, platforms, toilets of turnaround trains and pass-through trains is resourced from treated recycled waste water from the plant.” The officials also ascertained the development of an upcoming solid waste management plant which would use latest technology to generate electricity. The project of the solid waste management is to be sanctioned by the Divisional Railway Board. Another main factor responsible for the green certification is the 3,445 LED lights fit inside the railway station.
