Canadian Solar Sets Sights on 5 GW Wafer Unit in Thailand Energy provider Canadian Solar has announced the setting up of a solar cell production unit in Jeffersonville, Indiana. The facility, which will boast 5 GW worth of capacity, will supply the firm’s Solar’s module assembly plant located in Mesquite, Texas. The Texan facility that will produce TOPCon modules is expected to go online by the end of 2023 while the Indiana cell unit should kickstart production by the end of 2025. Canadian Solar and EDF Renewables North America- a provider of wind and solar power solutions in North America have entered into an agreement for multi-year module supply of 7 GW high efficiency N-type TOPCon solar modules for the Texan unit. “Establishing this factory is a key milestone that will enable us to better serve our U.S. customers with the most advanced technology in the industry,” stated Thomas Koerner, Senior Vice President of Canadian Solar. “This is the second of the anticipated long-term investments we expect to make in the U.S. as we think strategically about a local, sustainable and clean energy supply chain and to fulfill the long-term requirements of the local-content rules of the recently established IRA.” The cell factory will see investment exceeding $800 million from the firm and will be established in in the River Ridge Commerce Center. It will create close to 1,200 skilled jobs in its wake. Canadian Solar operates massively in China but also makes panels in Brazil, Thailand and Vietnam.
