The President of Bolivia Evo Morales has inaugurated the 5-MW photovoltaic plant in Tarija department. Connected to the National Interconnected System, the plant is located in the Yunchara Municipality and represents the investment of USD 11.6 million which amounts to BOB 79.4 million approximately, government has said. The plant comprises of 19,152 solar panels and is starched on the area of 12 hectares. It has potential of reducing the country’s reliability on natural gas by 140 million cubic feet per year, said Rafael Alarcon from the ministry of energy. Further, Empresa Nacional de Electricidad’s (Ende’s) arm Empresa Eléctrica Guaracachi is the company behind the project. Also, the key contractor in the deal is Spanish-Bolivian consortium Emias-Elecnor. The Empresa Eléctrica Guaracachi is Bolivia’s largest power generation company which was founded as the country was going through privatization of its electricity industry. Apart from Solar Energy projects the company is also working on biomass projects, hydroelectric projects and project combined cycles. Currently, the company is working on solar plant Yuchara, Uyuni solar plant, solar plant El Seine and Riberalta solar plant.
