A government memo has revealed that India will be issuing tenders for the installation of 250 GW of green energy capacity in the country by March 2028.

According to the Government memo, India will be inviting bids from developers for the installation of 15 GW of renewable energy capacity each in the starting two quarters of financial year 2023. In the next two quarters of the fiscal, the tenders will be issued for the development of 10 GW of green energy.

The memo says that India will be issuing 50 GW worth of tender for new green energy annually from here. Out of the total, 10 GW of tenders will be for the development of wind farms.

India is the third largest emitter of greenhouse gases after the US and China, but in terms of per capita emission, it is way lower than western world and East Asian Tigers. India wants to step-up the share of non-fossil fuel based energy generation in the energy basket to 50 per cent by the end of this decade. According to the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), the installed power capacity of India ending February 28 was 412 GW.

The share of green energy is currently just over 42 per cent and coal fired power continues to be more than half of the present capacity.

India had set a target of 175 GW of solar and wind capacity by the end 2022. It could add just over 122 GW through solar and wind capacities. The focus of the Indian government is now to achieve the 2030 target of adding 500 GW of non-fossil capacity by the way of solar, wind, nuclear, hydropower and biomass additions.

Last Year, Union Power and MNRE Minister RK Singh asked all Chief Ministers of States and Lieutenant Governors of Union Territories to set up state-level steering committees for energy transition to raise the renewables and reduce carbon emissions.
