ArcelorMittal Bremen cooperates with the local wind energy projecter WPD for the planning, construction and operation of Wind farms on the factory premises. Both companies have signed a Memorandum of Understanding. So is the foundation for long-standing cooperation, in which wpd on the ArcelorMittal factory premises in Bremen will build and operate up to ten wind turbines with a total nominal output of 72 megawatts in the coming years. The electricity generated by the plants is to be generated one hundred percent directly at ArcelorMittal Bremen for steel production to be fed. By way of comparison, the amount of electricity would be sufficient to include 50,000 four-person households each year power supply.

The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding marks another important step towards a climate-neutral Steel production of the steel plant. “Renewable energies are an important strategic element of our transformation. The cooperation with wpd is an excellent way to generate and use green electricity on site. With the new wind farm, we go one step further on our way. To achieve our goal and until the middle of the 1930s climate-neutral steel in Bremen, it is absolutely necessary that sufficient CO2-free electricity generated too internationally competitive prices are available – we need further support for this of politics,” explains Dr. Thomas Bünger, CEO of ArcelorMittal Bremen.

Björn Nullmeyer, Managing Director and CFO of wpd, added, “We are very pleased that we are happy to our experience and expertise of this exciting and forward-looking joint project to decarbonize the Bremen economy. Two local grown companies that tackle such a project together – this is a strong signal for the city and the state of Bremen.” Two major Bremen are cooperating with this project Companies to advance the topic of the energy transition on site. In an existing industrial area, the so-called Repowering of existing and the construction of new wind turbines transparently and sustainably implemented to make important next steps towards transforming the Bremen industrial sector towards more sustainability and climate neutrality.

The project consists of two planned phases. In the first step, two older wind turbines are repowered in repowering replaced by more modern and powerful models. In addition, up to three new locations are to be installed at the Area new facilities will be built. In the second phase of the project, another five plants will be planned and constructed. When planning and implementing, wpd will become all relevant aspects such as nature and species protection, sound emission or shadow casting wpd has been operating various wind turbines in the immediate vicinity and on for several years the site of the steel mill. The company has many years of experience in planning, construction, and operation of wind farms. As an experienced partner from Bremen, the company guarantees the necessary solid foundation for the development of the wind farm, the technical implementation, and the business processes to generate green electricity directly on-site.
