Amazon Debuts Hybrid Projects Globally with 300 MW in Madhya Pradesh & Karnataka

In Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka, Amazon India is set to establish 300 MW hybrid project (wind-solar). The projects would be established alongside Vibrant Energy, a subsidiary of a portfolio business of Macquarie’s Green Investment Group (GIG).

Amazon said in a statement that this is one of the “biggest wind-solar hybrid corporate power purchase agreements (PPA) by a technology business in India.” These projects are anticipated to produce 1,163,000 megawatt hours (MWh) of clean energy once they are operational, which is equal to the annual electricity required to power 380,000 average-sized homes in New Delhi, according to the statement.

Amazon currently owns five utility-scale renewable energy projects with a combined capacity of about 720 MW in India, including three solar farms in Rajasthan. These initiatives mark the launch of Amazon’s first hybrid wind-solar projects worldwide.

“We are on a path to powering our operations globally with 100% renewable energy by 2025. We have worked with government and industry stakeholders in India to unlock more corporate renewable energy procurement in the country,” said Abhinav Singh, Director of Customer Fulfillment, Supply Chain, and Global Specialty Fulfillment at Amazon India.

By integrating two technologies with various generating profiles, renewable hybrid energy systems, according to McKinsey & Company, maximise the usage of clean energy on the grid.

By 2040, Amazon wants to operate carbon-neutrally. Amazon has made investments in 17 utility-scale renewable energy projects across Australia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, and Singapore, with a combined capacity of more than 1,600 Mw.

Recently, Amazon in India signed three separate deals for a total of 420 MW for powering its operations in India. Additionally, Amazon also announced 23 new solar rooftop plants across its fulfillment centers in India, which will account for an additional 4.09 MW of renewable energy.
