Amara Raja To Set Up Green Hydrogen Fueling Station In Leh for NTPC

Amara Raja Power Systems has announced that the company has received an order from the state owned National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) for the development of the first green hydrogen fuelling station on the heights of Leh in Ladakh region. Amara Raja Power Systems is a part of the $1.3 billion strong Amara Raja Group.

The official statement of Amara Raja revealed that the green hydrogen fueling facility will come up at a height of 3,600 meters above the sea level.

Green hydrogen will be produced through the process of electrolysis where the water is split into hydrogen and oxygen using renewable sources of energy. The Amara Raja project will generate a minimum of 80kg every day of 99.97% pure green hydrogen. The clean fuel produced will be compressed, stored and dispensed thereafter.

Amara Raja also informed that the pilot project will be a precursor to large-scale green hydrogen transport and energy storage facilities. The company also said that the project’s success would be used for studying and deploying many other fueling stations in India.

The official statement also revealed that NTPC is also mulling to deploy five hydrogen fuel cell buses in Leh region. Vikramadithya Gourineni, Executive Director, Amara Raja, said, “The potential for hydrogen as an energy source of the future is substantial and projects such as these are critical to showcase this.”

“This challenging project will reaffirm our EPC expertise, and we are very excited about being the first to enter the green hydrogen infrastructure space,” stated Dwarakanadha Reddy, Business Head, EPC Division, Amara Raja.

The Indian Government had recently announced the Green Hydrogen Policy of the country whereby it looks to produce 5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of green hydrogen production by 2030. This will be over 80% of the present hydrogen demand of India. Yesterday, Total Energies and Adani Enterprises announced a major deal focused on a vision of a $50 billion investment into green hydrogen in India.
