Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL), India’s leading renewable energy provider, and Adani Power Limited (APL), the largest private thermal power producer in the country, have announced a new agreement with Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL). This deal will provide Maharashtra with a total of 6.6 GW of energy from both solar and thermal sources. The bid, which is nearly 1 lower than the current procurement cost of electricity in the state, was won after besting JSW Energy and Torrent Power in the process.

Under the agreement, AGEL will supply 5 GW of solar power from the Khavda Renewable Energy Park, the world’s largest renewable energy project. The project is currently under development in Kutch District, Gujarat. The solar power will be provided at a flat rate of INR 2.70 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) for 25 years. This project will be developed over the course of next three years.

In addition, APL will provide 1,496 MW of thermal power from a new ultra-supercritical thermal power plant. This plant will have a total installed capacity of 1,600 MW and will be constructed under a Design, Build, Finance, Own, and Operate (DBFOO) model. The thermal power supply agreement spans 25 years, with power deliveries expected to begin three and a half years after the start date for Unit 1 and four years for Unit 2.
Sagar Adani, Executive Director of AGEL, emphasized the company’s commitment to India’s clean energy goals, stating, “We are excited to work with MSEDCL to meet the growing energy demands through renewable sources. This partnership is a crucial step towards energy independence and sustainability.”
Anil Sardana, Managing Director of APL, highlighted the importance of conventional power in stabilising the grid, noting, “Adani Power is honored to support Maharashtra’s energy needs while integrating more renewable energy into the grid.”
The agreement marks an advancement in India’s energy sector, with the 5 GW solar capacity and 1.6 GW Thermal capacity being the largest commitment of their kind since 2020.

For Maharashtra, the deal is a key part of planning for the future, when it expects demand to move up from existing levels, and meeting its RPO (Renewable Purchase Obligations) as well. Currenntly at 12%, the state has an RPO target of 43% by 2030.
