60 GW Of PSP Projects Under Survey, Minister Tells Parliament By Chitrika Grover/ Updated On Tue, Dec 3rd, 2024 Highlights : This includes 11 hydroelectric schemes with a combined capacity of 8,036 MW and 44 pumped storage projects (PSPs) with a total capacity of 60,050 MW under S&I for the preparation of DPRs. 60 GW Of PSP Projects Under Survey, Minister Tells Parliament The latest update from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) indicates that major pumped storage projects (PSPs) spread across nine states have a combined installed pumped storage potential of approximately 181.4 GW in the country. Parliamentary data shared by the Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy and Power, Shripad Yesso Naik, in a written reply to the parliament, revealed that India has 60,050 MW of capacity under Survey & Investigation (S&I) for the preparation of a Detailed Project Report (DPR). This includes 11 hydroelectric schemes with a combined capacity of 8,036 MW and 44 pumped storage projects (PSPs) with a total capacity of 60,050 MW under S&I for the preparation of DPRs. Additionally, the minister noted that of the total capacity, the exploitable large hydro potential in the country is approximately 133.4 GW, as per a study conducted by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) during 2017–2023. Furthermore, the identified pumped storage potential is approximately 181.4 GW. The shared data highlights the pumped storage potential across nine states, which together account for 60,050 MW. These states are Rajasthan (6,160 MW), Uttar Pradesh (13,020 MW), Odisha (500 MW), Gujarat (1,560 MW), Madhya Pradesh (2,560 MW), Chhattisgarh (1,800 MW), Maharashtra (16,700 MW), Andhra Pradesh (15,850 MW), and Karnataka (1,900 MW) project. Pumped Storage Project In India Projects In West India Rajasthan has four projects namely Sukhpura Off-Stream (2560 MW), Shahpur (1800 MW), Sirohi (1200 M, Brahmani 600 MW project under preparation accumulating to a total of 6160 MW project. Gujarat is set to host a 1560 MW project from three states namely, Serula (960 MW), Juni Kayaliwel (300 MW) and Amalpada (300 MW) project. Projects Across East India Whereas, Uttar Pradesh sources 13020 MW from seven projects namely, Kandhaura (1680 MW), Musakhand (600 MW), UP01 (3660 MW), Shoma (2400 MW) Jhariya (1620 MW), Chichlik (1560 MW), and Panaura (1500 MW) project. Whereas, Odisha has one 500 MW Balimela PSP project. PSP Projects In Central India Whereas in central India, Madhya Pradesh has two projects of 2560 MW, including a 640 MW Indira Sagar project, a 1920 MW project in MP30 Gandhi Sagar. Chhattisgarh Project includes a cumulative 1,800 MW which is composed of an 800 MW project in Hasdeo Bango and a 1000 MW project in Bilaspur South India PSP Project Karnataka has two projects of 1.9 GW sourcing energy from the Saundatti (1600 MW) project and Narihalla (300 MW) project. Whereas Andhra Pradesh has 13 projects under preparation. These projects are, Gandikota (1000 MW), Chitravathi (500 MW), Somasila (900 MW), Owk (800 MW), Paidipalem East (1200 MW), Singanamala (800 MW), Paidipalem North (1000 MW), Veeraballi Off-Stream (1800 MW), Vempalli (1500 MW), Raiwada (900 MW), Kamalapadu (950 MW), Rayavaram (1500 MW), Gadikota (1200 MW) and Pedakota (1800 MW) thus taking the total project in Andhra Pradesh to 15850 MW.
