Maharashtra leads in the country for hosting the highest number of electric vehicle charging stations in the country, data shared by the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways said. The minister recently shared the data related to the EV charging stations before the Parliament in a written reply. 

As per the details shared by the minister, in India, there are currently, 5,293 electric vehicle charging stations established along National Highways. This included 4,729 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations set up under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas at an expenditure of Rs. 178 Crore.

In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today, he said that the Ministry of Heavy Industries has set up a target of 5,833 EV charging stations along Highways. out of a total of 7,432 EV charging stations through three Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoP&NG). The state has provided a capital subsidy of Rs. 800 Crore to these Oil Companies towards the establishment of 7,432 EV charging stations.

In the written reply before the Upper House, the minister shared data on the number of charging stations installed in the states. The date mentioned that a total of 5,833 have been installed in the country so far.  

The data placed six states as the top-performing states holding the highest number of charging stations. Among the total 32 states that have installed electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, Maharashtra holds the highest number of charging stations (750) followed by  Uttar Pradesh (577), Rajasthan (482), Tamil Nadu (369), Karnataka (300) followed by Gujarat (259) and Andra Pradesh (249). 

EV Charging Stations Installed & Funds Allocated 

Minister of State For Heavy Industries Krishan Pal Gurjar, in a written reply before the Parliament, shared details on the amount given to the Electric Vehicle (EV) manufacturers under Faster Adoption and Manufacturing (FAME-II) for Hybrid Electric Vehicles. 

“Rs. 5790 crores were given to electric vehicle manufacturers on sale of 13,41,459 EV under Phase II of the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing (FAME) of Hybrid Electric Vehicles. He mentioned, “Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) has sanctioned 2,877 electric vehicle charging stations in 68 cities across 25 States/UTs. Out of these charging stations, 148 Electric Vehicle charging stations are constructed and operational,” the minister said before the Rajya Sabha. 

The minister also shared, “The Ministry of Heavy Industries has sanctioned Rs. 800 Cr. as capital subsidy to the three Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG) for the establishment of 7,432 electric vehicle public charging stations.”

The minister mentioned, “Under phase-II of FAME India Scheme, subsidy amounting to Rs. 5790 crores have been given to electric vehicle manufacturers on sale of 13,41,459 number of electric vehicles as on 31.01.2024 (as per details given for electric vehicles claimed on FAME-II Portal as on 31.01.2024).”
