TPREL Hits 10.9 GW Capacity With NTPC’s 200 MW FDRE Deal

Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL), signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with NTPC Limited (NTPC), to develop a 200 MW Firm and Dispatchable Renewable Energy (FDRE) project. Tata Power Company subsidiary’s FDRE project is spread across multiple locations in India and is set to be completed within 24 months.

This project is expected to generate approximately 1,300 million units (MUs) of electricity annually, mitigating over 1 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year.  The project was won by TPREL based on competitive bidding and would consist of Solar, Wind, and BESS technologies.

Key Feature

A key feature of this initiative is the commitment to a 4-hour peak power supply, ensuring at least 90% availability during peak demand hours to support the growing energy needs of Distribution Companies. With this project, TPREL’s total renewable utility capacity has reached 10.9 GW.

Currently, 5.5 GW of this capacity is operational, comprising 4.5 GW of solar and 1 GW of wind energy. Additionally, 5.4 GW is under various stages of implementation, evenly split between 2.7 GW of solar and 2.7 GW of wind projects. These ongoing projects are expected to be completed in phases over the next 6 to 24 months in a staggered manner. 

About The Tender

NTPC last year concluded the 3 GW Firm and Dispatchable Renewable Energy (FDRE) Tranche 2 auctions to supply round-the-clock power through the Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS), the auctions. NTPC received bids for only 1980 MW out of the 3 GW on offer and has finally allotted 1584, or 80% of the aggregate bid capacity.

Leading the bids in the NTPC auction is ABC Cleantech (Axis Energy), with a bid at Rs 4.64/unit (300 MW), followed by Juniper Green Energy(200 MW)  and Hero Energy(120 MW)  at Rs 4.69, Serentica Renewables (200 MW), Tata Power (200 MW) at Rs 4.71, Brightnight Renewables(110 MW) and Renew Power (400)at Rs 4.72 each, and finally, Acme Cleantech at Rs 4.73/unit for 54 MW.

Previous Projects

Earlier, Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL), signed a Group Captive Power Delivery Agreement (PDA) with Fiat India Automobiles for a 12.62 MWp renewable energy project. The project is to be developed in Akola, Maharashtra, to supply power to Fiat’s manufacturing facility in Ranjangaon.

Additionally, the company’s 4.3 GW cells and module manufacturing plant, TP Solar has completed the construction of a 4 GW module manufacturing facility. Along with the module, the solar cell has commenced commercial production from the 2GW solar cell line. In addition, TPREL also provides electric vehicle (EV) charging solutions across various segments and other advisory solutions across the renewable sector.

As of date, TPREL’s total renewable utility capacity is 10.9 GW (PPA capacity is 8.8 GW) including 5.5 GW projects under various stages of implementation and its operational capacity is 5.4 GW, which includes 4.4 GW solar and 1 GW wind.  Presently, the company’s solar EPC portfolio is more than 15 GWp of ground-mount utility-scale, over 2.5 GW of rooftop and distributed ground-mounted systems
