The Indian division of the Japanese multinational conglomerate business Toshiba has inked a contract to sell its SCiB rechargeable lithium-ion cells to Chandigarh-based EVage Automotive (EVage), which is building the next 10,000 electric commercial vehicles. The collaboration comes after two years of joint development and validation to include these cells in EVage’s exclusive ultra-stable and quick-charging battery packs. The arrangement would ensure that there will be enough cells available in 2023 to support EVage’s manufacturing ramp-up and fill any outstanding orders for its delivery trucks in India. The alliance with Toshiba India also guarantees that EVage will achieve its cost and margin goals. According to the start-up, this is the first time lithium titanium oxide (LTO) cells have been used in commercial delivery vans. This will help EVage vehicles achieve breakthroughs in battery safety, reliability, and performance, which will be extremely advantageous for the customers of its delivery fleet. According to Toshiba, the SCiB cells have demonstrated good functionality over a wide range of charge and temperature conditions while retaining high levels of safety. These innovations allow the battery pack in the EVage vehicle to operate safely at full capacity up to 65 degrees Celsius and with a low danger of thermal runaway.
