GUVNL Awards 500MW/1000MWh BESS Projects At 2.80 Lac/MW/Month

GUVNL Awards 500MW/1000MWh BESS Projects At 2.80 Lac/MW/Month Solarworld, HG Win GUVNL 500MW/1000MWh BESS Projects

Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd (GUVNL) has awarded its latest 500MW/1000MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects to Solarworld Energy Solutions Limited and HG Infra Engineering Ltd at tariffs ranging from ₹2.80 lakh to ₹2.85 lakh per MWh per month. The newly discovered tariffs are about 25% lower than the previously discovered L1 rate of ₹3.72 lakh/MWh/month (without Viability Gap Funding or VGF.

According to the tender results, Solarworld Energy Solutions secured a 200MW project at ₹2,80,000/MWh/month, while HG Infra Engineering won a 300MW project at ₹2,85,600/MWh/month. The projects will be interconnected at a 66 kV level. Industry observers noted that the results mark a significant drop in BESS tariff discovery, indicating growing competition and maturity in the battery storage segment.

Incidentally, the previous tender from GUVNL at Rs 3.72 for a 500 MWh project, besides a smaller one before that. It is anybody’s guess if those projects will see the light of day if the issues plaguing the firm are not resolved soon enough.

Previous BESS Project: A Brief Comparison

The latest tender results were high than Telangana’s standalone BESS tender for a 500MWh (250MW x 2 hours) project was awarded at tariffs in the range of ₹2.40–₹2.45 lakh/MW/month. Issued by Telangana Genco (TGGENCO issued) in February, the tender included VGF support, and results were announced within a month. The L1 price discovered in TGGENCO’s tender was 9% higher than the lowest price found in other standalone bids with VGF.

However, GUVNL’s latest result came in lower than SECI’s recent BESS tender awarded to JSW Energy, which secured a 125MW/500MWh standalone BESS project at ₹4.41 lakh/MW/month. That tender also offered VGF eligibility, capped at either ₹27 lakh/MWh or 30% of the capital cost, whichever is lower.

However, the lowest tariffs were discovered in so far in the RVUNL’s 500MW/1000MWh standalone BESS tender, which came with a 30% VGF and attracted bids as low as ₹2.21 lakh/MWh. In that round, Solarworld Energy led with the lowest bid and won 125MW/250MWh. Oriana Power was awarded 50MW/100MWh at ₹2.22 lakh/MWh, Rays Power Experts secured 75MW/150MWh at ₹2.23 lakh/MWh, while JSW Neo Energy bagged the largest share—250MW/500MWh—at ₹2.24 lakh/MWh.
