NHPC, the Navratna company, has announced six winners of its 1.2 GW solar plus storage project. This is NHPC’s one of the first Solar + ESS tender. The project offers a 600 MW/1200 MWh energy storage system (ESS). NHPC allotted the project to Onix Renewables at Rs. 3.09/kWh and three other companies: Jindal India Renewable Energy, Kolar Solar Power, and NTPC REL. They secured 100 MW, 180 MW, 150 MW, and 300 MW, respectively. For Jindal India, the tender marks their first win in the segment.

According to the NHPC tender result, “The remaining two winning bidders, ReNew Solar Power and Adani Renewable Energy Holding, secured 300 MW and 170 MW, respectively, at Rs. 3.10/kWh. The tender for this project was released in September, and the results were declared in five months.

Company Name Capacity Awarded (MW) Tariff (₹/kWh)
Onix Renewable 100 ₹3.09
Jindal India Renewable Energy 180 ₹3.09
NTPC Renewable Energy 300 ₹3.09
Kolar Solar Power (Rays Power) 150 ₹3.09
ReNew Solar Power 300 ₹3.10
Adani Renewable Energy Holding 9 170 ₹3.10

NHPC’s Other Tenders: A Brief Comparison

With the battery energy storage system (BESS) pricing dropping each year, the tariff rate for projects with the BESS option is also decreasing. For instance, in 2024, SECI awarded its first BESS tender. It awarded the project at the lowest tariff of Rs. 3.41 per unit.

This was the first Solar + BESS tender under BOO mode, which was successfully bid for. Pace won 100 MW with a bid of Rs. 3.41 per unit, JSW Neo Energy won 500 MW with a bid of Rs. 3.42, followed by Acme Solar with a 350 MW win, and Hero Solar with 250 MW, also at Rs. 3.42. For JSW Energy, the win added significantly to their green storage portfolio.

NHPC FDRE Project

The tariff for NHPC’s solar plus storage tender, Rs. 3.09/kWh, is relatively lower than that for its FDRE tender. Last year, SECI awarded its 1.2 GW FDRE project under Tranche II to five successful bidders: Essar Renewables, Juniper Green Energy, Serentica Renewables, Hexa Climate Solutions, and Avaada Energy. The tariff for this tender was as low as Rs. 4.37 per kWh, which is higher than that for the latest solar plus storage tender.

NHPC allocated Essar, Juniper, and Serentica 300 MW, 200 MW, and 150 MW of capacities, respectively. These companies won the projects with their quoted tariff of Rs. 4.37 per kWh. Hexa won the 80 MW project at the same tariff, while Avaada secured 470 MW at a quoted tariff of Rs. 4.38 per kWh.
