Mumbai’s CSMI Airport Sets Up Electric Vehicle Fast Charging Stations

India’s EV development has drawn attention as people are increasingly inclined to make thoughtful travel decisions. Against this backdrop, Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) has erected six sturdy DC rapid EV charging stations at Terminals 1 & 2 to make a substantial contribution to the country’s green infrastructure while understanding travelers’ preferences. Standing tall, the CSMIA is proud of its vision and goal to develop an ecosystem that is focused on accelerating its transition to carbon neutrality. The brand-new fast charging stations will be in operation and open as Public Charging Stations (PCS) for passengers and visitors to CSMIA beginning December 9, 2022.

The EV charging stations  have been installed at P1 – Multi-level Car Parking (MLCP) at Terminal 1, P5 – MLCP at Terminal 2, and Airside of CSMIA. Commuters using an EV charging station at CSMIA’s multi-level car parking (MLCP) would only be charged for charging sessions if they are using privately owned EVs. EV users will receive a discount on their parking costs.

The airport has complied with all the standards, guidelines, and procedures specified by the regulators while keeping passengers’ safety in mind.

At each of the ports on landside, CSMIA has successfully put into service two DC fast chargers: the CCS Type II Dual Gun 60 KW and the GB/T (DC 001) Dual Gun 40 kW charger. The fast chargers set up at MLCP work with all of the country’s current electric vehicles. There will soon be more EV chargers with capacities of 60 kW and 240 KW to meet the charging requirements of airside logistics.

This initiative by the airport will help create a climate that prioritises the curb of carbon emissions. It also offers improvement in the air quality index (AQI) in the vicinity of the airport. CSMIA sources 100% green electricity to charge automobiles that will produce “Zero CO2” thanks to its on-site solar power plant, Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT), and green power purchases.

The airport has been a partner to the national mission of developing green infrastructure for Indian mobility needs and has been pioneering sustainable shifts in the aviation ecosystem. This year, the airport became 100 per cent sustainable, running entirely on green energy. It now has embarked on the mission for ‘Operational Net Zero Carbon Emission’ by 2029.
