Lakshadweep Opens Bids For Hybrid Rooftop Solar Project

The Lakshadweep Administration, Union Territory (UT) Kavaratti Electricity Department has invited online bids to develop hybrid rooftop solar power plants with Battery Energy Storage System (BESS).  The last date for bids submission is March 21st, 2025. 

The selected bidder will be responsible for, “Supply, Installation, Testing, Commissioning and Operation and Maintenance of 2,107 kW Hybrid Rooftop Solar Power Plants with 3 kWh Battery Energy Storage System for each kW system at Various Government Buildings of UT of Lakshadweep”

Lakshadweep has come a long way from its first on-grid solar project by the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) last year in 2024. The project had a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) for Kavaratti and Agatti islands with a combined solar capacity of 1.7 MW and a 1.4 MWh battery storage facility at Kavaratti. 

The union territory has adopted solar through off-grid solar projects, battery storage (BESS) projects developed by Honeywell Automation India Limited (HAIL) for the Solar Energy Corporation of India’s (SECI) in the Lakshadweep Islands. This marks India’s first on-grid solar project to incorporate BESS technology.

Lakshadweep is also exploring floating solar options to meet its energy requirements. One of the leading Renewable Energy Implementing Agencies (REIAs), Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI), intends to develop a floating solar project on the island. To accelerate this initiative, SECI recently issued a Notice Inviting Tender (NIT) to set up the grid-connected floating solar project. The document mentioned, “Request for Selection (RfS) Document for Selection of Solar Power Developers for Setting up of Grid-Connected Floating Solar PV (FSPV) Projects with Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Lakshadweep under RESCO Mode Through Tariff-Based Competitive Bidding.”
