Ferrari has launched its first EV next year with the opening of the new E-building production facility at its factory in Maranello.

The goal of the brand-new 42,500 square meter building, which was inaugurated in front of Italian President Sergio Mattarella, is to maximize “production flexibility” for the country’s premium automobile manufacturer.

“E” stands for “energy, evolution, and environment,” according to Ferrari. Ferrari’s new E-building will create the SF90, Purosangue, and its first EV. Robots will help in the E-building’s production.

The building’s name, which includes the letters “E” for “energy, evolution, and environment,” refers to the building’s intended usage for manufacturing the company’s first electric vehicle (EV) as well as combustion-engine and hybrid versions. Ferrari clarifies this. Production is scheduled in January 2025, with the Purosangue and SF90 likely to be the first to run down the new state-of-the-art line.

Ferrari said that housing production and development of all the powertrain types it will use in the coming years in a single building is in line with its strategy of “prioritising revenue quality over quantity”.

High-voltage batteries, electric motors and axles – which were cited as “strategic electric components that are highly relevant to differentiating Ferrari’s technology and performance” – will also be assembled there.

While Ferrari has confirmed that it’s working on an EV, it has remained tight-lipped on any technical details so far. Early patents suggested it could take the form of a four-wheel-drive two-seater and a recent report by Reuters – which Ferrari refused to comment on – suggested a price tag starting from Euro 500,000 (about Rs 4.5 crore).

The benefits of constructing a new factory for the impending electric vehicle were emphasized by Benedetto Vigna, CEO of the company: “We want to design, engineer, and create new technology, components, and processes here in Maranello for the full electric Ferrari. We have so made a special investment in the E-building, which will allow us to retain our competitive advantage and internal know-how for years to come. We can actually make a difference if we can grasp this entire system. It will guarantee that an electric Ferrari keeps providing the unique driving experiences that all Ferraris provide.

Ferrari made a big declaration of purpose when it decided to manufacture its own motors and batteries in order to maintain complete control over its next products.
