Eurocell Plans To Build First Gigafactory in the Netherlands

EurocellTo deliver battery cells to the energy storage and e-mobility ecosystem across Europe, Eurocell, an Anglo-Korean next-generation battery startup, has stated that talks are underway for the development of its first European Gigafactory in the Netherlands.

Eurocell plans to build the next Gigafactory in two stages, with full production beginning as early as 2025. By early 2023, the first phase will mass produce improved battery cells for current European customers. By 2025, the second phase, which may be located on the same site, will be able to produce more than 40 million cells annually.

The Gigafactory will support the rapidly expanding energy storage market in Europe with an initial investment of $800 million that will increase to $2 billion by 2028. It will also generate hundreds of direct and indirect jobs, transfer critical skills from Korean battery experts, and strengthen the economy in this strategic sector that is essential to achieving the Netherlands’ and Europe’s net zero ambitions.

Using its tried-and-true battery product, which has been verified and certified for scaled-up manufacturing, Eurocell will produce “production ready” technologies in just 12 months, a great deal faster than other Gigafactories.

According to Nick Clay, Chief Commercial Officer of Eurocell EMEA, “In its Climate Policy, the Netherlands states its intention to lead Europe in the fight against global warming with a comprehensive strategy to cut emissions across industries. With ambitions for rapid expansion in Europe, Eurocell is encouraged by our recent productive interactions with the Dutch Government and NOM, the investment and development organisation for the Northern Netherlands. We are hopeful that we will soon be able to determine the precise location of our first European Gigafactory as we move into the final stages of discussions.”

The South Korean companies that support Eurocell EMEA have decades of experience in electrochemistry, mass-producing batteries, and constructing Gigafactories. Its ambitious expansion goals have been made stronger by the numerous lucrative chances found in mainland Europe during the search for the project’s initial phase.
