Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) has invited an expression of interest (EoI) from prospective manufacturers to set up an integrated solar manufacturing facility in India. The total capacity to set up 20 GW solar PV manufacturing facility in India has been given a three year time frame. Under the EOI, SECI will gather information on the feasibility of such floating projects and prospective developers to help its forming of the call for bids for various capacities. The deadline for EOI submission is January 11, 2018. The plan is for 20GW of local manufacturing capacity is to “invite bids for allocation of project capacities, from prospective solar manufacturers who are willing to set up vertically integrated solar PV module manufacturing facility in India, including ingots, wafers, cells, and modules.” The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) recently announced its roadmap for achieving 175 GW of installed renewable energy capacity by 2022, which would require setting up of solar power plants of 77 GW capacity by 2020, entailing an investment of Rs 3,50,000 crore. The 20 GW solar manufacturing tender was also a part of this roadmap. The government wants big chunk of raw materials and equipment to be used in the 77 GW capacity be made in India.
